Details of how the banking cartel known as the Federal Reserve was created in the deepest of secrecy certainly sets the stage for a classic action picture worthy of Batman or James Bond. As a book it could be Harry Potter and the Bankers of the Federal Reserve. Here we have the evil bankers meeting in secret with the aim of controlling the world using an all powerful doomsday weapon that will nuke everybody’s money supply into a worthless puddle which will then allow the banking cartel, aka the government, to make debt slaves of us all and force us to work in bureaucratic government jobs to serve the welfare state. A good example of some worthwhile facts and interesting history being extrapolated into a right wing, pro-free market, anti-socialists diatribe.

The author first sets out to warn his readers of the dangers of fractional reserve banking and a debt based monetary system which prompts money to be printed out of thin air. As he tells it this inevitably leads to bank failure when people realize that the bank has given away most of their money and there’s a stampede on the bank. Then there’s the hyperinflation aspect of having too much money floating around once printed for all these loans. He talks about how the printing of money for loans is the way that the government creates a backdoor taxation via the resulting inflation because actual taxation would create public resistance to war. I was willing to go along with that. This also implies that without money wars wouldn’t be fought or at least not at such expense.

He throws in a few other conspiracy theories along the way which I was also willing to buy, and I was dismayed to learn that Churchill manipulated the sinking of the Lusitania in order to sway public opinion in the US towards entering WWI. Interesting details about how the German government tried to warn the American public against traveling on the Lusitania, but banking interests pulled the ads placed in all but one small newspaper. Then there’s the Jewish banking family in Europe that I had already heard about, the Rothchilds, who I was now to learn were in the habit of funding both sides of a conflict in order to benefit from the war profiteering including the Russian Revolution which they inflamed. This technique was passed along to J.P. Morgan, an American banker schooled in the ways of the Bank of England, (the first central bank) whom they took under their wing in order to get a toehold in the anti-semetic American financial circle. J.P. Morgan engineered the bailout of the Bank of England via the US government. This done with loans for the war effort that were then used to pay off the banks.

The Federal Reserve was set up in 1913 leading to the monetary excess of the 20s. This author would have it that the banking cartel also created the Great Depression in order to allow those investors in the know to remove themselves from the stock market before the crash so they could then buy up shares of companies at fire sale prices.

All of this I was willing to believe because of the documentation he presents, but the case he was making to get rid of the Feds and the fractional reserve monetary system was not convincing because instead of analyzing the effectiveness of the tools by which the Feds manipulate the money system, he launches off into his free market propaganda which he then makes worse by mounting a campaign against "environmentalism". This he says is a ploy by those in power to further hamper the free market with regulations and making off limits perfectly good timber located in forests earmarked for the spotted owl. Not too many will be willing to go along with that especially since the public is now convinced that it is deregulation of the market that got us into this collapse. In the final chapters of the book, the author refers to a book called Report From Iron Mountain from which comes his extrapolations that the banking system is part of the ultimate plot by an elite few to control the free world. The book referred to is considered to be one of the great literary hoaxes of our time, but you would have to be at least 60 years old to remember it. Thus a new tidbit for me to discover. The author claims that the hoax was a cover, but my suspicions were raised when he mentioned that John Kenneth Galbraith had claimed it was a hoax, but that Galbraith was actually one of the elite plotting. I already had a great deal of respect for Galbraith since he seems to have been one of the last liberal economists before the neo-cons took over.

The Creature From Jekyll Island is currently much sought after at the library probably because it is one of the few promising to explain the Federal Reserve, which may account for its dog-eared condition. A good book to read in parallel with the comics I got from the Federal Reserve.
